Located within the borders of Kars and Ardahan, Lake Çıldır is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Eastern Anatolia and offers a unique view by freezing completely in the winter months. Lake Çıldır is a natural dam lake formed by a lava flow and a debris spit. The only outlet of the lake, which is fed by many streams and springs, is the Telek Stream, a branch of Arpaçay on the Armenian border in the northwest. The largest is the island next to the Akçakale ruins. Especially between November and March, the surface of the lake is covered with ice and it becomes possible to ride on it with horse-drawn sleighs. The lake, which attracts attention with its natural beauty at all times of the year, offers boat tours and fishing in the summer months, and activities such as ice walking and Eskimo-style fishing in the winter months. Tasting the famous "yellow carp" fish in the restaurants around the lake is a special experience for visitors who come here.
