Magnesia, located in the Germencik district of Aydın, was a city famous for its trade and sports activities in ancient times. Until it united with Alexander the Great with its own consent (334 BC), it was under the rule of the Persians, and later under the rule of the Hellenistic kingdoms founded by his commanders, first the Seleucid Kingdom (240 BC) and then the Pergamon Kingdom (189 BC). These years were the most glorious periods of the city. Among the most impressive structures of the city are the Agora, the Temple of Zeus and the ancient theater. Its large stadium, built especially for sports competitions, was one of the important social centers of the ancient period.
