One of the symbols of Amasya, the Pontic kings' tombs are magnificent structures carved into the steep cliffs of Harşena Mountain. If you include the nine rock tombs inside Amasya Castle, there are 21 rock tombs. However, only some of them have survived intact to the present day. The largest of these tombs is the tomb of King Farnakis, which can be reached by steps. The purpose of these tombs, built during the Pontic Kingdom in the 3rd century BC, is to reflect the magnificence of the kings. These tombs were also used for punishment and prison purposes in some periods. The tombs are reached by crossing the railway from the narrow streets of Hatuniye neighborhood.
